International Youth Day – Empowering the Next Generation for a Brighter Future

By Adewumi Foundation

Every year on August 12, the world comes together to celebrate International Youth Day – a day dedicated to recognizing the power, potential, and contributions of young people across the globe. This day is more than just a celebration; it is a call to action, a reminder that the future of our communities, our nations, and our planet rests in the hands of today’s youth.

At Adewumi Foundation, we believe that investing in young people is investing in a better tomorrow. We see youths not as leaders of the future but as leaders of today. They possess the energy, creativity, and courage to bring about meaningful change if they are given the right support, education, and opportunities.

The Theme for International Youth Day

Each year, International Youth Day focuses on a specific theme set by the United Nations to address pressing issues affecting young people. These themes highlight challenges such as education, employment, innovation, mental health, and climate action – areas where the voices and actions of youth are vital.

Through these themes, the day shines a spotlight on the fact that youth participation is not optional – it is essential for global development and sustainable progress.

The Role of Youth in Nation-Building

Young people make up a significant percentage of Africa’s population. In Nigeria alone, more than 60% of the population is under 25 years old. This massive youth demographic represents a powerful force for transformation – provided they are nurtured, equipped, and empowered.

From leading community development projects to driving social innovations, young people are already changing the narrative in various sectors. Their energy and innovative thinking have the power to solve some of the toughest social and economic challenges we face.

Challenges Facing Today’s Youth

Despite their potential, many youths in Africa – especially in rural and underserved communities – face overwhelming challenges:

  • Lack of access to quality education

  • High unemployment rates

  • Limited mentorship and leadership opportunities

  • Exposure to poverty, violence, and social inequality

These challenges are not just personal struggles; they are national concerns that require urgent attention.

Adewumi Foundation’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment

At Adewumi Foundation, we understand that young people need more than just encouragement – they need opportunities. That is why we are committed to:

  1. Providing Access to Education – Through scholarships, school enrollment drives, and learning support programs for children and teenagers in poor communities.

  2. Skill Development & Mentorship – Equipping youths with life skills, vocational training, and guidance from experienced professionals.

  3. Community Engagement – Encouraging young people to actively participate in charity projects, humanitarian work, and leadership initiatives.

  4. Creating Safe Spaces – Promoting environments where young voices can be heard, respected, and acted upon.

A Call to Action

International Youth Day is not just for young people – it is for all of us. We all have a role to play in shaping an environment where youths can thrive. Governments, organizations, communities, and individuals must work together to remove the barriers that hold our young people back.

If we fail to invest in them today, we risk losing the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow. But if we empower them now, we secure a future filled with progress, equality, and hope.

How You Can Support

You can partner with Adewumi Foundation to empower young people by:

  • Sponsoring a child’s education
